FAQ: Can a non-Japanese person or non-Japanese entity buy a property in Japan?

Yes.

When buying a property in Japan, there is no limitation about nationality.

Some countries don’t allow foreigners to purchase real estate, only allow purchases of newly-built properties or only allow them to acquire relatively short leases or place restrictions on non-resident foreigners but there is no restrictions on a foreign individual or business buying Japanese property.

Foreign individuals and businesses can buy Japanese property on the same terms as Japanese ones, and this applies to non-residents also.

However, they may have to file a Japanese foreign exchange declaration.
